It took all day for Bethany to snatch a few minutes alone with her parents. She suspected her sisters were trying to prevent this, to stop her asking about Jermaine without them to run interference.

When she eventually managed it, she told Emily and Barrett every detail of what had happened, including her sisters’ reactions.

Both she and Emily looked to Barrett. His mother had been a witch, and she’d passed the gene on to his daughters. He knew the more about magic than Emily did, though Bethany’s mom had learned a lot from raising three witches.

Barrett’ eyes were fixed on his knees, and he appeared to be doing some fast thinking. When he spoke, his voice was calm, though Bethany thought she sensed the turmoil beneath the surface. “I think you had a wonderful experience, Beth, but you need to let it go. I doubt you’ll ever see Jermaine again.”

“That’s what Lisette said, but why? You know something I don’t. What is it?”

“Your father is right, Beth. You’re home now, and that’s what matters. Come on, help me with dinner.”

Bethany might be home in her body, but her heart was still on that island with Jermaine. Perhaps her mom read some of her thoughts, because she put a sympathetic hand on Bethany’s shoulder. “You know, we just want you to be safe, sweetie.”

“And I’d be dead if not for Jermaine! I hardly think he’s a danger to my safety.”

Her mom just squeezed her shoulder and stood up, getting out a chopping board. Bethany knew that what she’d said wasn’t entirely true. She never would have been in danger in the first place if she hadn’t seen Jermaine, but she could hardly blame him for that. She was the one who’d been foolish enough to follow him until she had barely any oxygen left.

It was clear that her family wasn’t going to tell her anything, which meant Bethany would have to find out for herself. The problem was, she didn’t know where to go from here. It wasn’t like she could just do a google search on manta rays that turned into people to get information.

Searches like that invariably turned up about a thousand myths mixed in with one or two facts, if you were lucky, and there was no way to tell them apart other than speaking to someone who actually knew what they were talking about.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Lisette walking into the room. “Beth, are you coming tonight? We’ve got a coven meeting.”

Even though she wasn’t a witch, Bethany had attended coven meetings before. Family members or trusted friends were sometimes included, and while the experience had always been magical, it tended to leave Bethany feeling a bit left out. After all, no matter how much they tried to include her, she still didn’t have the ability to use magic like the rest of them.

“That’s alright, I think I’ll go for a swim later.” Surely, she could recapture some of her joy swimming.

Lisette just nodded, giving her a sympathetic look.
